Safe Routes to School
Why is a Walk-to-School program so important?
Children today are making fewer trips to school by foot or bike than ever before. Trends indicate that as walking trips have declined, overweight status among children has gone up. There are many reasons for the decline of walking and biking to school:
1) Traffic congestion and speed
2) Pedestrian Safety
Many children do not have safe and accessible sidewalks to walk to school. Despite the many barriers, there are movements around the country to provide safe neighborhoods where children can walk or bike to school for fun and health!
To improve the health and increase the number of walking trips of school-aged children, Activate Omaha began its Walk-Your-Way program in Fontenelle and Highland elementary schools.
Current schools have applied and hope to receive funding to continue the programming.
