International Walk to School Day is October 6, 2010!

Activate Omaha is sponsoring Walk to School Day and is looking to partner with as many schools as we can to get kids walking to school that day.  Resources are available to assist your school in planning an event - big or small - and incentives are available to give to students who participate!

Why is a Walk-to-School program so important?

Today, more than ever, there is a need to provide alternative options for children to walk or bicycle to school safely.  Schools are struggling with increased traffic congestion around the school and environmental pollutants from idling emissions.  In addition, children engage in less physical activity, which contributes to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.  Safe Routes to School is a multi-faceted program aimed at increasing awareness of our Walking School Bus (groups of children who walk to school together along designated routes under the adult supervision) and increasing the number of children who walk or bike to school.

Safe Routes to School is a solution to these problems by addressing them through a variety of strategies.  Because of the specific needs of every community, and uniqueness of each school a combination of education, encouragement, engineering, and enforcement strategies could be used to help the schools reach their goals.  These strategies can lead to a changed school environment, an increase in physical activity among children and safety and wellness of our communities.

Since September 2005, Activate Omaha has partnered with many metro schools to improve the health and increase the number of children who walk or bike to school.  Some schools participate in the walk to school day events and others have developed weekly Walking School Bus programs.  Some schools have even applied and received funding to continue the goal of providing safe alternatives for children to walk and bike to school.
